It is believed that "Muhurat` is an auspicious time according to the Hindu calendar where the planets align themselves in such a way that the task you perform during this time duration, becomes fruitful and without the influences of evil forces. Every year, lakhs of Indians make the most of various such Mahurats to ensure well being and prosperity.
Similarly to capture this essence of Indian culture & traditions, the BSE & the NSE run one short session of trading every year during Diwali day, and of course, very aptly call this session, Mahurat Trading! It`s a tradition to trade during the Muhurat, as worship towards the Hindu Goddess of wealth.
Trading on this day, which is also the day when the Hindu financial years begins and is considered to bring blessing for the year ahead. A very interesting phenomena that takes place is that many Investors who have placed token orders don`t sell their investments as they consider them lucky and traders, who trade on this day, make sure they book their intra-day profits, however small they may be, to mark the first profit of the coming year. The rush to trade in the Mahurat trading session is furthered by the fact that it has come to become a good time for first time investors to effectively make their foray into the stock markets.
For all the investors there is also hope and aspiration for a better and more profitable year ahead. Muhurat trading is approximately an hour of trading that happens on Diwali (Laxmi Puja) day, usually in the evening.
The time for Muhurat trading changes every year. Trades made on this day are more for traditional, religious and sentimental reasons. Brokers and investors will make token investments and usually hold the stock for a year or so. Some traders also book intra-day profits.
But, Remember, while you make sure you make the most of this positive event, it is extremely important to focus on stock fundamentals and research before making investment decisions.
Also, more often than not, it won`t make too much sense of investing in the markets in the Muhurat session, unless you invest for the medium term to long term.
