Media - MSO packs: Another cog in digitisation wheel :: Edelweiss

In another significant development for digitisation, four large MSOs (Hathway, Den Networks, WWIL and Digicable) have announced their consumer packages. We expect the announcement of packages to bring further clarity to subscribers about subscription charges, and speed up the digitisation process. Lack of consumer packs was a major product gap in comparison to DTH. Also, Ms. Ambika Soni, I&B Minister, had recently met the Delhi Chief Minister, where the latter assured that Delhi will meet the deadline and the state government will take steps in this direction (Delhi has been a laggard compared to Mumbai). Further, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) has upped the ante in terms of government-run publicity campaigns in electronic and print media. Also, in our view, joint ads issued by major MSOs and individual ads by DTH players, apart from the firmness of MIB in meeting the deadline, augur well for the progress of digitisation.

Tax Talk: Oct 3 ::Business Line

I sold a house in October 2011 and invested the capital gains of Rs 50 lakh in NHAI 54EC bond 2011-12 (Tranche-XII). The bonds (Rs 500 at Rs 10,000 each) carry a deemed date of allotment of November 30, 2011 and due for redemption on November 30, 2014. I'm due to receive 6 per cent interest i.e. Rs 3 lakh annually.
i) Do I get the first interest paid out on April 1, 2012 since the prospectus states that the interest on the bonds will be payable for the period from the deemed date of allotment till the last day of the financial year i.e. March 31 on the first bank working day of the next financial year?
ii) Is the interest paid out each year taxable as “income from other sources”?
iii) Is the principal amount to be paid out on redemption on November 31, 2014 tax-exempt?

Auto Sales Update - Mixed bag :: Edelweiss

September was a mixed bag for auto sales. Car, two wheeler and heavy truck sales faced pressure YoY, whereas UVs and LCVs posted positive growth. Weak consumer sentiment (due to high inflation and interest rates) in conjunction with delay in the festive season this year by a month resulted in YoY decline in most segments. Though there was some recovery on sequential basis in cars and tractors. We prefer Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL) on expectation of faster-than-expected ramp up in production at the Manesar plant and exciting new launches (new Alto 800cc on October 16) ahead of the festive season.

How to develop a habit of saving ::Business Line

If you are like most of us, spending should come naturally to you.
In a world that actively encourages you to buy products and services with borrowed money, it is indeed hard to resist consumerism. But does your spending prevent you from saving? If it does, you have a problem at hand. Fortunately, understanding and applying behavioural psychology can help you moderate your problem. How is that possible?
Look at your purse. How many credit cards do you have? Agreed, credit card is an efficient way to pay for your expenses, especially when you travel. But credit cards also make you spend more. How? It hurts when you part with your money, even if you like to indulge. The problem is that you do not feel the pain when you pay with your credit card. Why is that so?
