HUL - Leading the innovation game : Edelweiss, PDF link

Hindustan Unilever (HUL), in a bid to cement its position in the water purifier business, has launched Pureit sachets. Recently, HUL also initiated several other innovations in products and packaging. We perceive the new positioning of Axe as the mother brand for all its male grooming products as a master stroke, as this segment is on a sharp uptrend. We expect HUL (largest soap player) to benefit from the correction in palm oil prices in coming quarters (however, rupee depreciation will limit gains) and softness in stance of major competitor, P&G. The key risk is delayed monsoon, which may impact rural demand. Vindicating our report, Go Contra; turnaround signals getting louder, dated May 26, 2010, the stock has since outperformed Nifty ~94% and crossed the INR1-tn market cap mark. Reiterate BUY’.

Construction - Dedicated Freight Corridor: Tracking growth; sector update : Edelweiss, PDF link

The ambitious Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) project, targeting creation of high-capacity, high-speed railway corridors dedicated to freight movement, boasts of being Indias largest-ever infrastructure project. The Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Kolkata corridors, with an estimated completion cost of ~INR900bn, are expected to revolutionise freight transport in India. With a 2017-18 completion target, steady progress in land acquisition and funding, we expect the next couple of years to see a lot of action on the project award side. This will trigger significant opportunities for EPC players like L&T, IVRCL, NCC, among others, apart from giving a fillip to the countrys logistic network.

Taking loan against credit card:Business Line

Taking a loan against your credit card will reduce your cash withdrawal limit and the overall credit limit of the card for the tenure of the loan.
One big drawback of cash withdrawal against credit cards is the high interest rate charged. At times, there is no free credit period available too. Besides, you need to dole out money in terms of some unnecessary processing charges. To overcome these drawbacks, you can instead consider a loan against your credit card in case you need some urgent cash.

Profiting from financial inclusion :Business Line

The Government’s Financial Inclusion Plan (FIP) for providing banking facilities to all six lakh villages in the country has its share of critics. Since its launch two years ago, the primary argument against the FIP has been that compulsory rural operations are a drag on the profitability of banks.
This could be the reason why Indian commercial banks missed out on their self-set targets for providing banking facilities in all villages with a population above 2,000 by March 2012. Against 74,414 villages identified and allotted among all the banks for coverage, as of March 2012, outlets were opened to cover 74,199 villages.
The primary argument against the FIP in its present form has been that merely providing every household with a bank account does not qualify as financial inclusion. Many of these accounts remain inactive, as villagers are either unconvinced of the merits of parking their monies in banks or simply don’t have the funds.

Markets for Derivatives :Business Line

n today’s column we will be discussing where derivatives contracts trade. There are basically two types of markets in which derivative contracts trade. These are exchange traded market and over-the-counter (OTC) market.
Exchange-traded derivative contracts (ETD): They are instruments that are traded via specialised derivatives exchanges or platforms on other exchanges. A derivatives exchange is a market where individuals trade standardised contracts that have been defined by the exchange. A derivatives exchange acts as an intermediary to all related transactions, and takes initial margin from both sides of the trade to serve as a guarantee.

Why portfolio diversification helps :Business Line

You may have a typical portfolio containing several stocks, bond funds and other assets because you believe that such diversified investments will not suffer large losses when the market crashes.
The 2008 sub-prime crisis, however, showed us that “diversified” investments cannot protect you during market crashes. So, why should you buy diverse assets? In this article, we show that the reason for buying diverse assets extends beyond simple diversification.
